This collection is a visual representation of the “metamorphosis” an individual
undergoes when she is faced with different challenges in life. This could
mean moving to a new environment, which results in a change to her usual comfort and familiarity.
In order to survive one must adapt, the individual transforms slowly from a foreign,
vulnerable being into a more comfortable, stronger version of herself. To illustrate the
contrast between strength and vulnerability, between the old and new self, drapes are
combined with more structured silhouettes and harder shapes in construction.
No matter how old or young, the human brain and body is constantly in a state
of evolution and change. Due to human nature and our instinct for survival, we as
are always evolving in order to survive in the ever-changing environment
around us. This can be observed from both a physical and a psychological
perspective. The idea of environmental psychology explores how physical spaces
influence the way we feel, think, and interact with the world. The theory of behavior
settings summarizes how social environments influence behavior, and explains the
relationship between the individual and their immediate surrounding. I find this idea very
interesting because from this point of view, we all tend to become vulnerable beings in
the larger context of social and environmental influence cast upon us, and
therefore tend to morph into different versions of ourselves in order to adapt and thrive.
I want to create an illusion of the metamorphosis of human body itself. Using
clothing as an extension of certain body parts and imaginary functions of the body from
different perspectives. Drawing inspiration from Jonathan Ducruix’s series of
photographs, I want to explore the endless possibilities for the morphing of the human
body that adopts to a changing environment.
